What is Carrageenan?

There are so many things that seem odd to us when we read about them for the first time. And the thing that seems the oddest to us is the amount of different items that you will find in your food. When you look at a package of something, you would assume that there are maybe five or six ingredients. But then you look at the list and you will see a list of more than 20 things. When we see these many names, and many of them are so long and odd, it can seem to us that we are eating something unhealthy.

But what you need to know is that the idea of adding additives to food is nothing new. It has been done for so many years, and it is something that we do at home too. When you are adding salt to something, you are making it an additive. However, what we need to know is whether the additives that are being put into our food are dangerous or not. And that is where an additive like carrageenan comes into the picture, because it is one of those additives that does unfortunately get a lot of bad attention.

What we think that you will want to know about this additive is that it is not bad for you at all. Yes, you may have heard some bad things about this additive, but you need to know that a lot of people spread misinformation about these things. Why does this happen? It happens for two major reasons. First you have the people who simply hate additives of any kind, and they will bad mouth any additive because they think it is going to damage our bodies. And they may have a point, but it is a little bit of an exaggeration.

Then we have those people who confuse additives because the names sound similar, or they have a similar impact. And that is where this additive got a bad name. It was confused for something else, and then people started to constantly claim that it was one of those problematic additives that we should avoid at all costs. But what you have to understand is that this perception about the additive is completely wrong, and it is one that we need to get rid of in a big way. We do not want anyone to spread this type of misinformation.

This is a very normal additive, and you are going to find it in a ton of foods. It is something that you will most regularly find in desserts and these types of foods. It is typically added to help give consistency to things, especially the items that you are going to want to preserve for a decent amount of time. And the most important fact is that any studies that have been done by the FDA have shown that it is one of those additives that is 100 percent safe as long as you do not have any specific food allergies.
